It’s been a while in internet time since the US Department of Education announced their plan to “de-professionalize” the graduate nursing degree, and I have been going back and forth on adding my voice publicly to this issue.
But I would imagine you aren’t really surprised. I think I am more surprised that a theology degree gets to keep this status than nurses and many of the others. Especially when the definition of “professional degree” fits graduate level nursing practice. This snip is from Snopes, which has the official definition per the US Dept of Ed. A spokesperson for US Dept Ed said: "We're not surprised that some institutions are crying wolf over regulations that never existed because their unlimited tuition ride on the taxpayer dime is over”. Well, I’d say this is bullshit given that ALL $60k I borrowed from them over the years for my graduate education was paid back in full WITH INTEREST. So…. I kind of feel like that was a free ride for them. They got more than I did!
